Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a little girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessional disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford was intrigued by the profession of acting in her teen years, and joined National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that this was not the best location for her. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth attempt, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time she was already making her debut on television in the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her repertoire in 1996.
